Nanga Parbat : Overview

Located in the Dimer district of the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, It is the western anchor of the Himalayas. It is one of 14 eight-thousand feet mountains . A huge, dramatic peak rising far above its surroundings, this mountain  is known for a difficult and challenging climb. It forms the western anchor of the Himalayan ranges and the westernmost is eight-thousand. It is located just south of the Indus River in the Dimer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, the Pakistan-administered region of Kashmir, flowing more than seven kilometers below the high point of mass in places. Not far to the north is the western end of the Karakoram border.

There is tremendous vertical relief in the localities in all directions in Nanga Parbat. In the south, Nanga Parbat is often referred to as the highest mountain face in the world: Rupal Face rises 4,600 meters (15,090 feet) above its base. Towards the north, the complex, somewhat slowly sloping Rakhikot flank rises to an altitude of 7,000 m (23,000 ft) in just 25 km (16 miles) from the Indus River valley, which is one of the ten highest elevations in such a short distance.

Nanga Parbat is one of only two peaks on earth which is in the top twenty of the two highest mountains in the world and is ranked ninth and fourteenth among the most prominent peaks in the world respectively. The second mountain is the famous Mount Everest, which ranks first on both lists. It  is also the second most prominent peak in the Himalayas after Mount Everest. The main center of Nanga Parbat is Joji La in Kashmir, which connects it with the remaining high peaks of the remaining Himalayan-Karakoram range. This mountain on the Tibetan Plateau is the westernmost peak of the Himalayas where Namcha Bairwa marks the eastern end.

A  Short Glance on Nanga Parbat

Diamir is also another name for Nanga Parvat. It  is one of the highest mountains in the world (8,126 m) located in the western Himalayas. The steep southern wall of this mountain rises from the valley below to an altitude of about 4,600 meters and its northern part goes down about 7,000 meters and joins the river Indus.

The first climber

Albert F. Mummery, an English Alpine mountaineer, first attempted to climb the glacier and snow-capped mountain in 1895, but died in the expedition. At least 30 other climbers (mostly German-led) were killed due to bad weather and frequent avalanches on Mount Nanga.
