Kartik Dance In 1697, with the help of Gurudwara Harivansh Upadhyaya and Vishwanath Upadhyaya, King Siddhinar Singh Malla started Kartik dance. Started from 5 days. In 1723, Srinivasa Malla, son of Siddhinar Singh, added seven more days, including Bath: Pyakh: (folk drama). Yoganrendra Malla, son of Srinivasa, added other examples and Madhavan Leela dance.It takes another 15 days to dance both of these dances. Thus, the practice of dancing continued for 27 days. This dance continued till 2006.
But the people’s revolution of 2007 broke this dance and it only lasted for two days. Baraha and Narasimha only started dancing. This went on for 30 years. In the year 038 BS, Kartik Dance Promotion Committee was opened to show this dance in its old form, which lasted for 8 days. In 071 BS, Kartik Dance was registered as a dance conservation committee. At present, the committee has been conducting Kartik dance for 12 days.
What is its significance?
According to our ancestors, this dance was started for the prosperity and welfare of the country. Krishnalila and folk drama are shown in this dance. In folk drama, the deeds of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar in human incarnations on the earth are shown in the past, future and present. It is instructive. Earlier, folk dramas were performed in Newari and Krishnalila in Maithili. Now everything is in Newari language.It is due to lack of financial resources. Kartik Dance .
The lack of artists and instrumentalists has added another problem. But whatever the financial problem, we artists have been continuing this dance as a labor. This dance, performed for 27 days, looked different every day.Like others, Ashta Matrika dance is performed every day. In this, different dances are shown every day in different stories. In addition, the entire Newar community has been participating in this dance. For example, Upadhyaya has been performing Narasimha, painter Hiranyakashyapu, Shrestha Krishna and Devi dance Shakya.
The descendants of Harivansh Upadhyaya have been performing Narasimha dance till now. Others have continued the work of their ancestors. Tantric method is used in Kartik dance. Tantra is used in dances like Barah, Narasimha and Bat Pakh. When you become a Hiranyakashyap, you should fast and if you become a Narasimha, you should fast without even drinking water.
