Puspa Basnet: CNN Hero 2012 Nepal
Puspa Basnet who has been taking care of the children who have been forced to live with their parents in the jail, has been nominated as a CNN Super Hero. CNN Television of America is going to select the Super Hero Award for the first time on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the CNN Hero Award. Puspa Basnet is one of the five nominees for Super Hero. Out of these five, a superhero will be chosen.
Puspa Basnet, the director of the Early Childhood Development Center, became a CNN hero in 2012, beating nine competitors based on internet voting. As soon as she was declared a hero in 2012, she won a prize of US २ 250,000 including the title.

The choice of super hero will also be based on internet voting. According to CNN, voting can be done through Facebook and Twitter. Voting is open from 8:45 a.m. Nepali time on Saturday. Voting will be available online until 6:45 a.m. Monday. The CNN Super Hero selection program will be broadcast live on CNN Television on Monday at 8 am. Along with Basnet, CNN has nominated Liz McCarthy and Chad Pregrak from the United States, Afrin Penaflorida from the Philippines, Robin Lim from Indonesia and Superheroes.
While studying in college, Sanukanchi Tamang Basnet, who was staying in the jail with her mother, came to catch her while she was going to the Central Jail in Sundhara for field work on ‘Social Work’. That incident in 2005 inspired Basnet to engage in social work. Since then, she has been taking care of the children in jail with their parents at the Early Childhood Development Center. That’s why she won the 2012 CNN Hero title.
CNN has been giving the title of CNN Hero every year to those who have made significant contributions to social service in different countries of the world.
Before Puspa Basnet, Anuradha Koirala, chairperson of Maiti Nepal, an organization working against trafficking in women, had won the 2010 CNN Hero title.
Similarly, Maggie Doyne, an American woman active in the field of women and children in Nepal, brought the title of CNN Hero, 2015 to Nepal. She has been living in Nepal and working for women and children.
