Jiri :Switzerland of Nepal
Jiri Bazar
Jiri was once the gateway to Everest. It was called Zurich in Switzerland. But now times have changed, It has changed. It is becoming difficult to see tourists in Jiri. The number of tourist arrivals in Jiri has decreased after the earthquake. Tourist arrivals have further declined after the Lamosangu Jiri road expansion work has seen inconvenience in transport operations for several years.
The integrated development plan was launched with the help of the Swiss government after the citizens of Switzerland saw it as geographically similar to Zurich. It operated Road in Lamosangu, Technical School under Education, Hospital under Health, Cheese Industry, Agricultural Farm and others.
According to the local elders, when the hospital was run with the direct participation of the Swiss, people used to come for treatment not only from different districts of Nepal but also from Darjeeling, India. Students from different districts of the country still come to Technical School to study ANMI, Sub-Overseer and Agricultural Technical Education.
The decline in tourist arrivals in Jiri is certainly not just a problem of roads. In the past, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Bhojpur and Ramechhap also had business centers in there . According to the locals, there is a shortage of buyers in there after the expansion of the road and expansion of the market in every region. Those who go to climb Mt. Everest can also reach the base camp of Solukhumbu directly by air.
Clean, Green and Organic Jiri Campaign
In the past, Jiri’s fields were covered with foreign tents, but now he wants to see fair skin. , which can be reached at a distance of 188 km from Kathmandu and 55 km from the district headquarters Charikot, has been making strides in physical and social development since the local level election. Clean, well-organized and wide roads, attractive and well-equipped hotels, education, health and communication facilities are better and more adequate than in the past .The hotels in there are now economical and well-equipped. There are 1,000 to 3,000 rooms in a hotel with all facilities. The Jiri municipality has also shown interest in maintaining uniformity in the hotels there.

The Jiri municipality has put forward various plans to make it look like Zurich not only in name but also in work. Various programs are being run to make it clean jiri, green and organic . The Jiri Municipality, which has started a regular sanitation campaign for clean , has constructed roads, belts and railings in the market area in coordination with the Division Road Office. Similarly, construction of green park for green , tree planting campaign and other programs have been started for the organic campaign. Member of the House of Representatives from Dolakha Parbat Gurung is also helping to make Jiri clean, green and organic. With his coordination and financial support from NSAW Nepal, Municipality has recently completed a planning workshop. The workshop was attended by organic engineers from China, Germany, USA and Nepal.
One ward, One park
Jiri Municipality has also introduced the concept of one ward one park to attract internal and external tourists. The municipality has stated that a campaign has been started to build a picnic park, green park, religious and cultural park in the ward of municipality. The municipality has stated that the construction work of the park has been started so that the tourists can spend at least 1-2 days in different places of there.
The language and culture of the Jirels
Another feature of Jiri is the Jirel caste. The municipality has helped to preserve the language, culture and customs of the Jirel caste. The Jirel Museum is also being constructed with the support of the Government of Nepal. The concern of the Jirels, who consider themselves the descendants of Kirat, is that the language is disappearing. Social activist Tek Bahadur Jirel says that since the existence of Jirel Jiri is only possible through the development and protection of the Jirel caste, there should be initiatives from all sectors for the protection of Jirel language, culture and traditions.Suman Jirel, who has published a book on Jirel language and culture, says that ethnic, linguistic and cultural studies are still needed for ethnic identity and preservation.
Due to its natural, religious, cultural, social and physical development, Jiri, the second major market and tourist center of Dolakha, is expected to attract more tourists on a regular basis than in the past.it would have been more appropriate if Jiri’s house could have been built in a traditional style that reflects Jirel culture with modern technology during the post-earthquake reconstruction.
The municipality and the locals have failed in this matter. It is the youngest of Dolakha. Jiri has the potential to produce a wide variety of agricultural products. Agricultural products including tea, kiwi, chilli, chilli and potato are among the major potentials of it . If these products can be made organic, it can find a good market even abroad and it can help in economic development.
There is no organic production sector in Nepal. Therefore, I have given special priority to Jiri as it can be developed as an organic area in terms of potential. In the future, people will come in search of organic agricultural products.
