Dakshinkali : The Powerful Goddess Temple Near Kathmandu Valley
Dakshinkali
Dakshinkali is a village development committee in Kathmandu District in the Bagmati Zone of Nepal. There are 822 houses in this place. Away from the noise and polluted environment of Kathmandu city, this village is naturally rich. The village is touched by Chaimle on the south, Talkudundechaur on the west, Sheshnarayan on the north and Setidevi VDC on the east. There is a temple of Mother Dakshinkali in this village. Which is world famous. Especially on Saturdays and Tuesdays, the temple is very crowded.
There is a mother’s temple on the top of the temple. There is a Newari settlement especially in Dakshinkali. There is also a temple of Gopaleshwar Mahadev in Dakshinkali village. Archaeologically, this temple has its own significance. Similarly, in the same village development committee, there is a temple of Ganesh in Kotaltol in Ward No. 1, which is an important dance style of Asia, which the locals call Gore Ganesh Temple.
There is a local saying that Lord Shiva’s wife Parvati is also called Gauri and Gore became Ganesha because she is his son. Similarly, Dakshinkali Ward No. 2 which includes Kochutol where there is a temple of Tilvikrameshwar Mahadev. In this very old temple, a very small Budhanilkantha of Lord Budhanilkantha has been replaced. Similarly, Ward No. 3 has Kotghar, Hirga, Bhimsen Temple, Jamkeshwari Temple and other places which are always known as the main chowk of Pharping city and the historical palace area (Laiku).
There is also a historical Bhagwati temple behind the Jamkeshwari temple. The historical lotus pond of Dakshinkali Ward No. 4 has its own existence. This is the largest statue of Saraswati in Asia. This idol of this place which was stolen about 1200 years ago could not be stolen by the thief but only the head was stolen and brought back from abroad after 1200 years and now it is kept safe in the museum.
Similarly, there is a Mahalakshmi temple on the west side under this Dakshinkali VDC. A special fair is held here on the full moon day of Kartik every month. Those who fulfill their desires are offered a special item made of rice (goja 🙂 in this temple on that day. The tradition of not performing special Kartik dance including Mahalakshmi for 4 consecutive days from Kartik full moon is still alive.
