King Rana Bahadur Shah had declared his eldest prince Ranodyot Shah illegitimate while making Bikram Shah his successor. After Kantavati expressed her desire to see her son become king while she was still alive, Ran Bahadur Shah abdicated the throne and crowned Bikram Shah.

After his retirement, Rana Bahadur Shah  changed his name and declared himself Swami Nirvananda and started living in the temples of the valley. After that, Kantavati also retired and started living with Swami Nirvanananda. Meanwhile, Kantavati contracted smallpox. For the treatment of the disease, Swami Nirvanananda gave alms to the Brahmins and even worshiped many gods and goddesses. However, Kantavati’s life could not be saved. After Kantavati’s death, Swami Nirvanananda lost consciousness.
