The Red Palace became the Yak & Yeti Hotel
The Yak & Yati Hotel on the side of Durbar Marg was built 100 years ago during the Rana period. The ‘Red Palace’ built by Veer Shamsher Jabra for his youngest wife Topkumari Devi has now been converted into a five-star hotel. Built in 1890, this magnificent building is accompanied by a garden.
Spread over an area of 300 ropanis, the hotel also has a white palace on the south side. The Red Palace was built under the influence of European architects at the time. For which the red marble was brought to Kathmandu from Italy via Calcutta.
The mirrors in the building and many other expensive items were also ordered from Europe. The palace was taken over by Tej Shamsher, son of Kaila of Vir Shamsher. In 1934, Juddha Shamsher deported Tej Shamsher and captured him. Later, after the end of the Rana rule in 1951 BS, Lal Durbar came under the ownership of Tej Shamsher’s son. Later, in 1977, the palace was converted into a Yak & Yati Hotel.

The White Palace became the Royal Empire Boutique Hotel
The Royal Empire Boutique Hotel was also a palace built by the Rana. Also called the White Palace. In the 18th century, Shri 3 Maharaj Juddha was built during the reign of Shamsher Jabra. At that time, Juddha Shamsher himself was a good engineer. Juddha Shamsher had given this building to his son Dhruv Shamsher.
Even Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa grew up in the palace with Shamsher’s son. After the death of Dhruv Shamsher, the palace was taken over by his eldest son Manohar Shamsher.
Shankar Hotel – The palace where queens Aishwarya and Komal were born
It was built in the 19th century by Jeet Shamsher Rana and his brother Shri 3 Maharaj Vir Shamsher with the help of Engineer Narasimha Rana. At that time, expensive items including mirrors, velvet and marble were ordered from Europe to decorate the palace. The exterior of the palace was built in a very fashionable and neo-classical style. The palace was built in 1894.
After Jeet Shamsher’s death in 1913, the palace was taken over by Maharaj Kumar Agni Shamsher Jabra. He was the son of Jugh Shamsher. Agni Shamsher’s granddaughters Queen Aishwarya Shah, Komal Shah and Princess Praksha were born in this palace.
Maya Manor
The Maya Manor Hotel has been operating by renovating the 95-year-old palace in Hattisar, Kathmandu. This is the palace of Balaram Samsher.
The hotel has been opened by renovating the Victorian-style palace and constructing a new building that looks similar on the side. Maya Manor has 46 rooms.
Noya Hotel
The Noya Hotel in Garidhara, Kathmandu was also a palace. This 11-room hotel was also built by the Rana in 1980. At that time Rana was very much influenced by British architects. Due to which he was also interested in building a huge palace.
