Today I want to look at why cities plant trees. The first benefit is temperature. Streets with trees are noticeably cooler in summer, because the leaves provide shade. Second, trees help to reduce flooding. Their roots allow rainwater to soak into the ground instead of running across hard surfaces. A third benefit is less obvious: wildlife. Even a single street tree can provide food and shelter for birds and insects. However, trees also bring costs. Councils must pay for regular pruning, and roots can sometimes damage pavements.
