According to the organizer Chamere Cave Conservation Society, 7 oxen are being slaughtered in the fax of Nilkantha Municipality-5 Khalte of Dhading. Jaya Prithvi Bahadur Singh, son of the then Bajhangi king Bikram Bahadur Singh, visited his uncle’s house in Taruka in 1887 BS to entertain the people. Similarly, 11 oxen are being slaughtered in Betrawati under the auspices of Gosainkunda Youth Club. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Shivamaya Tumbahamphel and others are participating in the bullfight in Vetravati.
Following the procession to Taruka, Betrawati in Nuwakot on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, the bullfighting competition has recently expanded to other places in the district. Rojina Rai, coordinator of the Jatra Management Committee and vice-chairperson of the village municipality informed that 3 oxen have been registered in the Katti Chhap of Likhu Municipality-3 organized by the Nepal Magar Association. There will be various cultural programs including bullfighting.
Bullfighting fairs were held at Pipaldanda, Shivpuri Gaonpalika-5, Gariphant, Tadi Gaonpalika-4, Satvise and other places in Panchakanya Gaonpalika-3 of Nuwakot.

Ghamsaghamsi alternately between a pair of Jura bulls. Cattle have become the center of attraction. Everyone is interested in how the bull fought with passion and art. The venue is very entertaining. Thousands of spectators are swarming around. It is difficult for the police and volunteers to manage the crowd.
It was a different experience when I reached Vetravati at noon on the day of Maghe Sankranti to watch the bullfighting festival. Oops, what are all these scenes for? There is entertainment, but also an important day in history to commemorate the bullfighting festival here. Hearing this, I was even more curious before reaching the festival site.
The decision to go to Vetravati in this year’s Maghe Sankranti was made only the evening before. I could not deny the request of the organizers as I was getting the opportunity to visit Vetravati for the first time even after reading the news in the newspapers about the bullfighting festivals taking place in different places.

Our trip was coordinated by Shiva Lamichhane, a tourism entrepreneur from Rasuwa. As per his advice, we met at Kalanki Chowk on January 22 at 8 am and headed towards Vetravati. Also present was Laxman Dangol, a science journalist. The journey with a studious young man like him was not unforgettable.
During the conversation, Shivaji also spoke about the Vetravati bullfighting tradition. According to him. No. After the treaty of Vetravati was signed between the Tibetan army and the Nepal army in 1849 BS, it was customary to have fun by fighting bulls. It was interesting to note that the people of Bhote Tibet and Nepal, who had experienced war-torn areas due to the war, started celebrating by fighting bulls to celebrate the end of the war. Although history has been written in the context of the treaty, no record has been found that the bullfighting festival has started since then. He has been hearing this issue from the previous generation from the Shrutismriti tradition. So it seems legendary to the listener. Although I knew something about the cultural, religious and natural aspects of Vetravati, I first heard about it from him.

The importance of such history-remembering festivals seems special. At the same time, it is a matter of showing whose cattle is strong as a reputation to reflect the ancestry of the farmers. It is also a powerful image associated with agricultural culture.

The journey was convenient. There were no roadblocks on the way. It was 10:30 am when we reached Devighat in Nuwakot after having breakfast at Tamangni Didi’s Hotel near Naubise Bazaar. We stopped there for a while in front of Prithvinarayan’s statue. Where has our respect for the national hero who gave birth to modern Nepal diminished by uniting the small states of Nepal into one? We reverently bowed to his statue and took a picture standing with him.
It is fun to travel looking at the mountains, greenery and rivers. I also like nature’s art very much. I think there can be no greater creator than nature. We reached Vetravati feeling the same beauty. After taking a short time to eat and drink, the bulls had already started fighting when they reached the festival site without any delay. The venue was surrounded by a grand gathering.
Vetravati is the confluence of Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts. It is said that a festival place has been built on a large field on the bank of Falakhu river. The mythological name of this river is Rudra Ganga. The river flows from Bhairavkund and joins the Trishuli River which flows from Gosainkund. This region is also known as Uttargaya region. This place looks beautiful from the point of view of natural beauty.
Gosainkunda Youth Club Vs. Every year since 2062 BS, bullfighting has been celebrated in Vetravati on the day of Maghe Sankranti. Earlier, it was said that after the Vetravati treaty, people started having fun by fighting bulls, but in the meantime, they could not get continuity. Lately, the bullfighting festival has been getting continuity due to the activism of the locals.
Eighteen cattle from Rasuwa and Nuwakot were brought to Vetravati for slaughter this year. Farmers from Harkapur, Sahugaun, Tupche, Fikuri, Gerkhulgagat villages of Nuwakot and Laharepowwa, Dhuseni, Bogatitar, Cadletar and other villages of Rasuwa came to the festival site with their cattle. Bullfighting is practiced in pairs based on the weight and age of the bull. The competition will be between one pair only. This time, Rs 3,000 was provided for the first place bull, Rs 2,500 for the second place cow and Rs 1,500 for the only participating cow. Bulls that do not want to fight and fight for less than 3 minutes are considered as participating bulls. After the program, some vitamins were also provided by the Animal Husbandry Office of Uttargaya village of Rasuwa to keep the cattle healthy.
Farmer Chaturman Tamang, who brought cattle from Tupche in Nuwakot, was stunned when his cattle got the first prize. He said, “I have been feeding the cows by feeding them rice, flour and millet since Mangsir.
Farmers of some villages are also trying to get the winners of the village to participate in the fair by fighting among themselves before bringing them to the competition. Since the bulls that come in the competition are selected with strong and combative tendencies, the brightness of the fight is worth watching.
While returning from the fight, the spectators have to be careful as the bull is running in an aggressive manner. There is also a possibility that such bulls will hit and run. I saw the volunteers being tortured to take the cows to and from the festival site. In front of my eyes, a 12-year-old boy was hit by a returning bull. Thankfully, my feet were not trampled and nothing happened! Special safety precautions should be taken while performing such games.
In this way, it is necessary to be aware of the issue of animal rights while fighting cattle. Do not force them to fight by training and chasing them. Cattle should be able to graze in a natural way, such as in a grazing area, without any physical or mental impact.
However, due to the increasing use of hand tractors, the number of cattle breeders in rural areas has been declining recently. Will such programs increase interest in cattle conservation, albeit a small one?
Organic manure is produced from animal husbandry including cattle. It can displace chemical fertilizers that affect human health and, in the long run, even damage the soil. It is equally useful for bio-gas production.
“The bullfighting festival is organized as a clean recreational sport,” said Gyan Kumar Dangol, president of Gosainkunda Youth Club. “Every year, the attraction of the event is increasing and there is an enthusiastic participation from the locals.”
After the bullfighting, folk dances, performances by local musical bands, and children’s dances were added to entertain the audience. It has helped in the development of art music at the local level.
Ritu Gamdan, a young tourism worker from Rasuwa, says that such programs will help the new generation to know the old culture, help in the promotion of domestic tourism and increase the economic income of the locals.

The confluence of historical sites, cultural centers and natural beauty, Vetravati is evolving into a tourist destination. If we focus on infrastructure development and publicity, there is a lot of potential here.
We returned to Kathmandu at 5 pm after the program. On his way back, V.S. We also saw a wide stone of Vetravati, which had a treaty between Tibet and Nepal in 1849. At that time, the residents of the place heard that the treaty was signed on the same steep rock. When we arrived, we saw farmers making straw huts in the surrounding fields on the rock. It is a wonderful place to hold a small assembly. It would be better to keep a brief record of the historic Vetravati Treaty near this rock.

The relationship between Nepal and China is very old. It can be understood that the formal beginning of friendly relations between the two countries was from the Vetravati Treaty. History was remembered by leaning on such an important treaty stone. I think this huge stone is also a witness of history.
On the way we went to the gorge but on the way back we went back to Shivpuri. The road so far has been a bit short. We returned to Kathmandu in about 3 and a half hours. The road is still under construction. After becoming better, it will be easier. After visiting Vetravati in the morning, we returned to our residence in Kathmandu in the evening.
Vetravati can be a great destination for tourists who want to observe the occasional cultural activities, see the historical sites and enjoy the natural beauty.
