Bagmati River : History About Bagmati Civilization Nepal

Old Bagmati

The clean Bagmati river, which is suitable for drinking water at any time, is in a network of problems at this time. Not only the river, but also the history of Hindu civilization is connected with the Baagmati civilization, which flows through the middle part of the capital. But the problem is growing instead of decreasing.

The Bagmati River, the cradle of the Baagmati River / Civilization, the epicenter of the faith and belief of about 30 million Nepalis and Hindus, has been polluted for nearly three decades by the growing population of the capital, unhealthy and uncontrolled urbanization and unmanaged sewage and garbage.

The flow of the river has been declining in recent years. The waterway is getting narrower and deeper. Encroachment has increased. The problem of the Bagmati River is the declining quality of the watershed as well as the loss of recognition of cultural and artistic beauty. Two hundred rivers in Nepal and 44 kilometers of river banks in Kathmandu Valley have been misused. Aquatic biodiversity has been wiped out.

Nepal is world famous for trekking tourism. The only way we can sustain this is to see a bright future in the field of external tourism. The trekking route has to be paved anew. In the past, various physical constructions have gradually reduced the quality which we are not aware of. Not only for the natural pilgrimage route, now it may be our wisdom for Nepal to be able to explore the religious pilgrimage route as well.

Religious pilgrimages have been going on in Nepal since time immemorial. Examples of this are Madhav Narayan Swasthani Brat of Sankhu, Dipankha Dharmik Padayatra, Char Narayan, Holy Bagmaati River Dharmik Padayatra and Silutirtha and many other religious pilgrimages. I would like to inform here about the religious pilgrimage that has been closed since mid-2034 BS and is now in operation again.

The Pashupati Area Development Fund has resumed the 41-year-old Bagmati Yatra to preserve the Bagmati civilization, which has been closed since 2034 BS. The method of bathing on foot at 195 places of pilgrimage from Katuwal Daha to Bagaddhar is called Bagmati Yatra. This Baagmati Yatra has been conducted for the purpose of earning merit and fulfilling one’s desires without any disease in the body parts. The yatra, which was recently halted due to water pollution in the Bagmati, has been started saying that public awareness is needed about sanitation in the Bagmati.

The total watershed area of the river is 3750 square kilometers. In 2066 BS, the five-year ‘Baagmati Action Plan’ approved by the Council of Ministers on July 10 came into force. The Bagmati rescue campaign was also launched. However, the problem remained. It’s been three years since the five-year action plan expired. It is the same as Baagmati.

In order to save the Bagmati civilization and its overall development, the government formed the Pashupati Region Environmental Improvement Implementation and Monitoring Committee in 2051 BS.The following year, the empowered Pashupati Area Sewerage Reform Implementation and Monitoring Committee was formed with some modifications.

Stating that it has not been able to work as per the target, it has been working in 2064 BS by forming an empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee. Even though it was named as empowered, it could not work as per the target due to insufficient legal authority.

The journey has been started five years after the start of the Bagmaati Sanitation Campaign, reviving its religious and cultural significance. The journey from Katuwal Daha to Baghaddhar on the Bagmati River is 18 koshas (43 kilometers). Every year from Baisakh Krishna Chaturdashi to Baisakh Shukla Purnima, the journey to Bagmati was 17 days.

During the pilgrimage, pilgrims bathe in about 170 places around the Bagmaati River. Participants in the Bagmati Yatra donate various materials including land, diamonds, pearls and other items. The elders have been telling about the journey that has been started.

The river has been encroached due to squatter settlements and it is difficult to demarcate the river as the areas around the river have been encroached in various ways. Shrestha urged the Urban Development Secretary and the Minister to find a way to reduce the pollution of the river.

Donations will be offered at 195 shrines along with 127 other shrines and sub-shrines along the Bagmati River. On the first day of the Bagmati Yatra, the pilgrimage starts from Pashupatinath.

The joint bench of the court had ordered the opposition including the Prime Minister’s Office and the Office of the Council of Ministers through the Office of the Attorney General to remove the pollution and maintain cleanliness in the water of the Baagmati River on March 26, 2070 BS.

On the second day, after bathing at Sundarighat Balkhu, worshiping Panchalingeshwar and Pachali Bhairab at Teku Dobhan, 27 pilgrims on the way rest at Shankhamul. On the third day, after bathing at Prayagghat from Shankhamul, more than 40 pilgrims on the way bathe and worship Koteshwar Mahadev.

Thus, this Bagmati Pad Yatra, which is completed with great joy and exhilaration for 17 days, is completed in the last 7 days. Again, the public perception that it should be run for 17 days has been developed. Although there was a tradition of walking and bathing in Bagmaati in the past, it has changed with the changing times.

In any case, 40 years later, we still have a lot of work to do. The encroachment of Bagmati and keeping the holy river sacred seems to be absolutely necessary. Sewage and manure should never be mixed. It should attract the attention of the world by bringing a high quality master plan from the state level.

Bagmati -Notes Nepal
Old Bagmati

In foreign countries, a small thing is made into a mountain. We are lagging behind in our own Nepal and following foreign culture.Similarly, for 17 days, passing through Koteshwar Mahadev, Guheshwari, Sundarijal, Budhanilkantha, Bajrayogini, Chagunarayan, Shankhatirtha, Guheshwari, Mrigeshwor, Birupaksha and reaching Rudragadeshwar, the Bagmaati Yatra ends.

Bishnumati, Tukucha, Dhobikhola, Manahara, Hanumante, Kodku, Balkhu and Nakhu rivers are mixed in Bagmati river. The once-clean Bagmati is now polluted because the sewage is mixed directly into the river. The ‘Bagmati Safai Maha Abhiyan’, led by former chief secretary Lilamani Poudyal, is still in operation every Saturday. The campaign has made Bamgati more pollution-free than in the past.

Although the committee proposed the Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee Act in 2066 BS, it has not been completed yet. Due to the lack of the Act, the work to be done for civilization along the Bagmati River is being hampered. An act that has been stuck for nine years has become an additional problem.

Citizens, ministers, prime ministers and presidents are not ignorant of the civilization connected with the Bagmaati River. The river should be kept clean as it has an emotional connection with the Bagmaati from birth to death and should be handed over to future generations.. The plight of the river has become a matter of pain for anyone who understands the Bagmati civilization.

The challenge for all is to restore the clean and green Bagmaati, which was handed down by our ancestors in the past. It is not hidden from anyone that our own short-sighted activities, which are facing challenges, have turned the Bagmati into a slope when the capital’s sewage is mixed in the tower-like Bagmati.

Preserving the Bagmati civilization was inevitable at that time and expressed his commitment to spare no effort to solve all the problems related to it. His commitment was limited to words. On the other hand, the committee has not been able to manage its own assets due to lack of budget.

The government has not been able to address many of the squatter settlements crossing the river. Even the other Singha Durbar has not been able to manage the sewage completely and sustainably. The government has been unable to focus on the dozens of historical, cultural and archeological sites in the vicinity of the Bagmati. No one is able to pay attention to the tangible and intangible heritage associated with civilization.
