Read the passage and answer the question. Throughout the day, a chemical called adenosine slowly builds up in the brain and makes us feel sleepy. Caffeine works by blocking the brain's adenosine receptors, so we feel more alert even though our bodies may still be tired. The effect does not disappear quickly: caffeine stays in the body for several hours. For this reason, sleep experts advise people who have trouble sleeping to avoid coffee, strong tea and cola in the afternoon and evening. How does caffeine make people feel more alert?
सही उत्तर: ख) It stops adenosine from having its normal effect.
Caffeine works 'by blocking the brain's adenosine receptors', so adenosine cannot make us feel sleepy.

Read the passage and answer the question. A vacuum flask, often called a Thermos after an early brand, keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for many hours. It has two walls with a vacuum between them. Because there is almost no air in the gap, heat cannot easily pass through by conduction or convection. The inner surfaces are usually silvered like a mirror, which reflects heat radiation back. The weakest point is the stopper, so most of the heat that escapes does so through the top. According to the passage, where does most heat escape from a vacuum flask?
सही उत्तर: ग) through the stopper at the top
'The weakest point is the stopper, so most of the heat that escapes does so through the top.'

Why can heat not pass easily through the walls of a vacuum flask?

'Because there is almost no air in the gap, heat cannot easily pass through by conduction or convection.'

Read the passage and answer the question. On a clear night, stars appear to twinkle, but the stars themselves are not flickering. Their light travels through the Earth's atmosphere, where layers of moving air at different temperatures bend it slightly in changing directions. Because stars are so far away, each one appears as a tiny point, and these small changes make it seem to jump and shimmer. Planets are much closer and appear as tiny discs rather than points, so they usually shine with a steadier light. This is one reason why astronomers build telescopes on high mountains or launch them into space. Based on the passage, why are telescopes built on high mountains?
सही उत्तर: ख) so that light passes through less of the atmosphere
The atmosphere causes twinkling, so a high site means less atmosphere for light to pass through; this is presented as 'one reason'.

Read the passage and answer the question. Why is the sea salty while most rivers are not? As rain falls and flows over rocks, it dissolves tiny amounts of minerals, including salts. Rivers carry these dissolved minerals to the sea. When sea water evaporates in the heat of the sun, the water rises into the air but the salts are left behind. Over millions of years, this process has slowly increased the amount of salt in the oceans. River water also contains salts, but in amounts far too small for us to taste. Why does the sea remain salty even though water evaporates from it?
सही उत्तर: ख) The salts are left behind when the water evaporates.
When sea water evaporates, 'the water rises into the air but the salts are left behind'.

Read the passage and answer the question. Why do zebras have stripes? Scientists have proposed many explanations, including camouflage, confusing predators and keeping cool. In recent years, the explanation with the strongest experimental support is that stripes discourage biting flies. In one study, flies landed far less often on horses wearing striped coats than on horses in plain coats. Flies seem to find it hard to slow down and land accurately on striped surfaces. Even so, researchers admit that stripes may serve more than one purpose. What is the writer's final position?
सही उत्तर: ग) The fly explanation is well supported, but stripes may have several functions.
The last sentence says 'researchers admit that stripes may serve more than one purpose'.

सही उत्तर: ग) as evidence from an experiment that supports one explanation
The horse study showed flies landed less often on striped coats, which supports the fly explanation.
