  1. Read the passage and answer the question. In a famous study published in 1968, the psychologists Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson told teachers at an American primary school that a test had identified certain pupils as likely to make rapid intellectual progress. In reality, those pupils had been chosen at random. By the end of the school year, many of the selected children showed greater gains in their IQ scores than their classmates. The researchers concluded that the teachers' expectations had influenced the children's progress, perhaps because the teachers gave them more attention and encouragement. What did the researchers conclude?

Please don't worry about picking me up; I know it's very early. I'll take a taxi to the hotel, have a rest and meet you at the café near your office at 12:30 for lunch instead. If that time doesn't suit you, just text me. Can't wait to see you! - Meena What does Meena suggest instead of being picked up?

  5. Read the passage and answer the question. The dodo was a large, flightless bird that lived only on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. With no natural predators on the island, it had no need to fly or to fear other animals. When Dutch sailors began visiting the island at the end of the sixteenth century, they hunted the birds, and the animals they brought with them, such as rats, pigs and monkeys, ate the dodos' eggs, which were laid on the ground. Within less than a century of those first visits, the dodo had disappeared. What does the passage suggest about the dodo's lack of fear?

  7. Read the passage and answer the question. Sunita arrived at the bank twenty minutes early on her first day, wearing her best shoes, which pinched her toes. The branch manager shook her hand, pointed her to a desk piled high with files and disappeared into a meeting. For an hour nobody spoke to her. Then an older clerk, Mr. Thapa, put a cup of tea beside her. 'Everyone sits at that desk on their first day,' he said with a wink. 'The files are empty. It's a test of patience.' Sunita laughed for the first time that morning. What does Mr. Thapa's wink suggest?

  10. Read the passage and answer the question. Old phones, laptops and televisions make up what is called electronic waste, or e-waste. These devices contain valuable metals such as gold, silver and copper, but also harmful substances such as lead and mercury. When e-waste is dumped in ordinary landfill sites or burned in the open, these toxic materials can poison soil, water and the people who handle them. Proper recycling recovers the valuable metals safely, but it is expensive, so much of the world's e-waste is still not recycled through official channels. According to the passage, why is much e-waste not recycled through official channels?
