  1. Read the passage and answer the question. Old phones, laptops and televisions make up what is called electronic waste, or e-waste. These devices contain valuable metals such as gold, silver and copper, but also harmful substances such as lead and mercury. When e-waste is dumped in ordinary landfill sites or burned in the open, these toxic materials can poison soil, water and the people who handle them. Proper recycling recovers the valuable metals safely, but it is expensive, so much of the world's e-waste is still not recycled through official channels. Why is e-waste described as both valuable and dangerous?

  2. Read the passage and answer the question. WARD 3 WASTE COLLECTION Kitchen (green) waste is collected every Monday and Thursday. Recyclables (blue bags: paper, plastic bottles and cans) are collected every other Tuesday, starting on Tuesday 2 April. Glass must be taken to the collection point behind the ward office; it will not be collected from homes. Bags must be outside by 7 a.m. on collection day. Bags left out on the wrong day will not be collected and may result in a fine. What should residents do with empty glass jars?

  4. Read the passage and answer the question. A thangka is a Buddhist painting on cotton or silk, traditionally made in Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. Thangkas usually show deities, scenes from the life of the Buddha or mandalas, and they are used as aids to meditation and teaching. Painters follow strict rules about the proportions of each figure, so training can take many years. Because a thangka can be rolled up like a scroll, monks could carry it easily from one monastery to another. Why can training as a thangka painter take many years?

  6. Read the passage and answer the question. Every few years the city announces a new plan to 'solve' traffic congestion, and every few years the queues of cars grow longer. The problem is not a lack of plans but a lack of follow-through. The bus lanes painted in 2015 were never enforced, so cars simply drive in them. The cycle paths promised in 2018 exist only on paper. Before announcing yet another grand scheme, the council would do better to make the measures it has already agreed actually work. What does the phrase 'exist only on paper' suggest about the cycle paths?

  9. Read the passage and answer the question. Our bodies follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, called the circadian rhythm, which controls when we feel sleepy and when we feel alert. Light is the main signal that keeps this internal clock in time with day and night. When we fly quickly across several time zones, the body clock stays on 'home time' for a while, causing jet lag: tiredness during the day, sleeplessness at night and poor concentration. Many people find travelling east harder than travelling west, because it requires the body to fall asleep earlier than it is used to. Based on the passage, which advice would most likely help travellers adjust to a new time zone?
