  1. Read the passage and answer the question. Our bodies follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, called the circadian rhythm, which controls when we feel sleepy and when we feel alert. Light is the main signal that keeps this internal clock in time with day and night. When we fly quickly across several time zones, the body clock stays on 'home time' for a while, causing jet lag: tiredness during the day, sleeplessness at night and poor concentration. Many people find travelling east harder than travelling west, because it requires the body to fall asleep earlier than it is used to. What is the main cause of jet lag, according to the passage?

  4. Read the passage and answer the question. The deepest known point in the world's oceans is the Challenger Deep, at the southern end of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean. It is nearly 11,000 metres deep, so if Mount Everest were placed at the bottom, its peak would still be more than two kilometres under water. The water pressure there is more than a thousand times that at sea level. Only a small number of people have ever travelled to the bottom; the first were Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh, in 1960. Which statement is supported by the passage?

  6. Read the passage and answer the question. Iceland sits on the boundary between two of the Earth's tectonic plates, which is why it has so many volcanoes and hot springs. Icelanders have turned this into an advantage: around nine out of ten homes are heated by geothermal energy, with hot water from underground piped directly into buildings. Geothermal and hydroelectric power together also supply almost all of the country's electricity. As a result, although Iceland has a cold climate, it depends very little on imported fossil fuels for heating and electricity. What does 'turned this into an advantage' mean in the passage?

  8. Read the passage and answer the question. For three days, the posters had hung on every lamp post in the neighbourhood: a photo of a small brown dog and the words 'LOST - REWARD'. On the fourth morning, Kiran heard faint whining from the drain behind the vegetable market. Lying flat on the wet ground, he reached in and pulled out a muddy, shivering animal. When he carried it to the address on the poster, an elderly woman burst into tears and pressed an envelope into his hands. Kiran gave it back. 'Buy him some good food,' he said. 'He's had a hard week.' What does Kiran's response to the envelope show about him?
