1051. Read the passage and answer the question. Cities are often several degrees warmer than the countryside around them, especially at night. This is known as the urban heat island effect. Roads, roofs and concrete buildings absorb heat from the sun during the day and release it slowly after dark. Cities also have fewer trees and less open soil, so there is less evaporation to cool the air. In addition, cars, air conditioners and factories give off heat.
