  1. Read the passage and answer the question. In parts of Morocco and Chile where rain almost never falls, villagers collect drinking water from fog. Large fine-mesh nets are stretched between poles on hillsides facing the sea. As fog blows through the nets, tiny droplets stick to the fibres, join together and run down into gutters and pipes. A single large net can collect hundreds of litres on a foggy day. The method needs no electricity, but it only works in places where fog is frequent and the wind brings it in the right direction. How is water collected in this method?

  2. Read the passage and answer the question. Most people know that the sky is blue, but few can explain why. Sunlight is a mixture of all colours. As it passes through the atmosphere, it hits tiny gas molecules, which scatter shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue, much more strongly than longer wavelengths such as red. This scattered blue light reaches our eyes from every direction, so the whole sky appears blue. At sunrise and sunset, light travels through much more air before reaching us, so most of the blue is scattered away and the remaining reds and oranges dominate. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

  8. Read the passage and answer the question. Legend says that, in ancient Greece, a messenger ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce a victory and then died of exhaustion. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896, organisers created a long-distance race in his honour. At first the distance varied, but at the 1908 London Olympics the course was set at 42.195 kilometres, reportedly so that the race could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box. This distance later became the official standard. Which statement is true according to the passage?
