मुख्य व्याख्या
Task

Note-taking: कम लेख, धेरै सुन
सबैभन्दा ठूलो गल्ती हरेक शब्द लेख्न खोज्नु हो। लेख्दा सुन्न छुट्छ। Noteboard मा keyword, symbol र arrow मात्र प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्।

| ↑ / ↓ | बढ्यो / घट्यो |

Lecture मा signal words सुन्नुहोस्; यिनले मुख्य बुँदा आउँदैछ भन्ने संकेत दिन्छन्:
- Topic: ‘Today I want to talk about…’, ‘Let’s look at…’
- Contrast: ‘However’, ‘But’, ‘On the other hand’
- Example/evidence: ‘For example’, ‘In one study’
- Conclusion: ‘So’, ‘The key message is’, ‘To sum up’
Retell को structure
- Topic sentence: The speaker discussed / The lecture was about …
- Main point 1: She explained that …
- Main point 2 (contrast वा evidence): He also mentioned / However, …
- Main point 3 (वैकल्पिक): According to the lecture, …
- Conclusion: In conclusion, the speaker argued that …
Reporting verbs
एउटै ‘said’ बारम्बार प्रयोग नगरी फरक verbs प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्: explained, argued, pointed out, mentioned, suggested, emphasised।
महत्वपूर्ण परिभाषा
- Re-tell: सुनेको कुरा आफ्नै शब्दमा फेरि भन्नु; शब्दशः दोहोर्याउनु होइन।
- Signal words: lecture को संरचना संकेत गर्ने शब्द।
- Main idea: lecture को केन्द्रीय सन्देश।
- Supporting detail: main idea लाई प्रमाण वा उदाहरणले समर्थन गर्ने जानकारी।
- Reporting verb: अर्काको भनाइ रिपोर्ट गर्ने verb, जस्तै explained, argued।

Lecture 1: Sleep and learning

Today I want to talk about sleep and learning. Many students believe that staying up late to study is the best way to prepare for an exam. However, research on memory suggests the opposite. While we sleep, the brain replays what we learned during the day and stores it more firmly. In one type of study, students who slept after learning new words remembered more of them the next morning than students who stayed awake. So, the key message is simple: sleep is not wasted time. It is actually part of the learning process, and cutting it short can make all that late-night effort less useful.

Model retell
The speaker discussed the relationship between sleep and learning. She explained that many students think studying late at night is the best way to prepare for exams, but research shows the opposite. According to the lecture, during sleep the brain replays and stores what was learned earlier. She also mentioned studies in which students who slept after learning new words remembered more than those who stayed awake. In conclusion, the speaker argued that sleep is an important part of learning, not wasted time.

विश्लेषण: Topic, विद्यार्थीको धारणा र research को विरोधाभास, प्रक्रिया (brain replays), प्रमाण (study) र निष्कर्ष सबै समेटिएका छन्। Lecture को ‘However’ लाई ‘but research shows the opposite’ भनेर आफ्नै शब्दमा राखिएको छ, जसले contrast को सम्बन्ध स्पष्ट गर्छ।
Lecture 2: Street trees

Let's look at why some cities are planting more trees along their streets. The most obvious benefit is shade. In hot summers, tree-lined streets can feel noticeably cooler than streets without trees, because leaves block sunlight and release water into the air. But trees also help in less visible ways. Their roots allow rainwater to soak into the ground, which can reduce flooding after heavy storms. Of course, trees are not free. They need watering, pruning, and space underground, where pipes and cables already compete for room. So planners have to choose the right species for the right street.

The lecture was about why cities are planting more trees along streets. The speaker first explained that trees provide shade, so tree-lined streets feel cooler in summer because leaves block sunlight and release water. He then mentioned a less visible benefit: roots help rainwater soak into the ground, which can reduce flooding. However, he also pointed out that trees have costs, such as watering, pruning and the need for underground space. Therefore, planners must choose suitable species for each street.
