Read the passage and answer the question. In 1935, around one hundred cane toads were brought from Hawaii to Queensland, Australia, in the hope that they would eat beetles that were damaging the sugar cane crops. The plan failed: the beetles lived high up on the cane stalks, where the ground-dwelling toads could not reach them. Worse, the toads had few natural enemies in Australia and bred rapidly. Today there are millions of them across much of northern Australia. Because the toads are poisonous, native animals that try to eat them, such as some snakes and lizards, often die. Why did the plan to control the beetles fail?
सही उत्तर: ग) The toads could not reach the beetles high on the cane stalks.
The beetles 'lived high up on the cane stalks, where the ground-dwelling toads could not reach them'.

Read the passage and answer the question. In 1960, the young British researcher Jane Goodall was watching wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, when she saw a male chimpanzee strip the leaves from a twig, push it into a termite mound and pull it out covered in termites, which he then ate. At the time, many scientists defined humans as the only animals that made tools. Goodall's observation forced them to rethink that definition. Her mentor, Louis Leakey, famously remarked that scientists would now have to redefine 'tool', redefine 'man', or accept chimpanzees as humans. What does Leakey's remark suggest?
सही उत्तर: घ) The discovery had major consequences for how scientists define humans.
Leakey said scientists would have to change their definitions of 'tool' or 'man', showing how important the discovery was.

He believed that sport could help his patients recover physically and regain their self-confidence. The event grew year by year, and in 1960 the first Paralympic Games were held in Rome. What was special about the date of the first competition?

Read the passage and answer the question. In 1895, the German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen was experimenting with an electric current in a glass tube when he noticed that a nearby screen had begun to glow. He realised that some invisible kind of ray was passing through the black paper that covered the tube. Because he did not know what the rays were, he called them 'X-rays', using X as the symbol for something unknown. Within weeks, he had made an image of the bones in his wife's hand. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery. What first made Röntgen aware of the rays?
सही उत्तर: ग) A screen near the tube began to glow.
He 'noticed that a nearby screen had begun to glow'; the image of the hand came weeks later.

Read the passage and answer the question. For centuries, sailors on long voyages suffered from scurvy, a disease that causes bleeding gums, extreme tiredness and, eventually, death. In 1747, a Scottish naval surgeon, James Lind, tested several possible treatments on sick sailors. Those who were given oranges and lemons recovered much faster than the others. Today we know that scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C, which fresh fruit and vegetables provide. Although Lind's result was clear, several decades passed before the British navy regularly supplied its sailors with citrus juice. What does the final sentence suggest about the British navy?
सही उत्तर: ग) It was slow to act on Lind's findings.
Although the result was clear, 'several decades passed' before the navy regularly supplied citrus juice.

Read the passage and answer the question. In a classic experiment published by the psychologist John Ridley Stroop in 1935, people were shown colour words printed in ink of different colours and asked to name the colour of the ink. When the word 'red' was printed in red ink, participants answered quickly. But when the word 'red' was printed in green ink, they took noticeably longer to say 'green' and made more mistakes. For skilled readers, reading is so automatic that the meaning of the word interferes with the task of naming the colour. Versions of the test are still used today to study attention. As used in the passage, what does 'interferes with' mean?
सही उत्तर: ग) gets in the way of
To 'interfere with' a task is to prevent it from happening smoothly.
