  1. Read the passage and answer the question. A tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake beneath the sea floor. In the deep ocean the wave may be less than a metre high and can pass beneath ships unnoticed. As it reaches shallow water near the coast, it slows down and rises much higher. Sometimes the sea suddenly draws back from the beach a few minutes before the wave arrives, a natural warning that people should move to higher ground at once. Why might ships in the deep ocean fail to notice a tsunami?

  3. Read the passage and answer the question. The magnitude scale for earthquakes is logarithmic. Each increase of one whole number means that the ground shaking is about ten times larger and the energy released is roughly thirty-two times greater. A magnitude 7 earthquake therefore releases about a thousand times more energy than a magnitude 5 earthquake. According to the passage, roughly how much more energy does a magnitude 7 earthquake release than a magnitude 6 earthquake?

  4. Read the passage and answer the question. Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are the same type of storm; only the name changes with the region. A storm that forms over the Atlantic or the north-east Pacific is called a hurricane, one in the north-west Pacific is called a typhoon, and one in the Indian Ocean or the South Pacific is called a cyclone. According to the passage, what would a powerful storm that forms over the Bay of Bengal (part of the Indian Ocean) be called?

  5. Read the passage and answer the question. Antibiotics kill bacteria or stop them from multiplying, but they have no effect on viruses, which cause colds and flu. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed does not help the patient and gives bacteria more chances to become resistant to the drugs. Doctors therefore advise patients not to ask for antibiotics when they have a common cold. True, False or Not Given: Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can help bacteria become resistant.

  7. Read the passage and answer the question. People with blood group O negative are often called universal donors, because their red blood cells can be given to patients of any blood group in an emergency. However, O negative patients themselves can receive red cells only from other O negative donors. For this reason, hospitals are always keen to keep a good supply of this blood type. Why might an O negative patient be harder to treat than others?

  8. Read the passage and answer the question. Reef-building corals get most of their food from tiny algae that live inside their tissues and also give them their colour. When the sea becomes too warm for too long, the corals expel these algae and turn white, a process known as bleaching. Bleached corals are not dead, but if high temperatures continue for weeks, they may starve. According to the passage, why do bleached corals turn white?

  10. Read the passage and answer the question. In regions with clear seasons, a tree adds one growth ring each year. In warm, wet years the ring is wide; in cold or dry years it is narrow. By matching the patterns of wide and narrow rings in very old wood, scientists can work out when a wooden object was made and learn about past climates. This method is called dendrochronology. Complete the sentence with NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS from the passage: Tree rings can tell scientists about ___.
