Read the passage and answer the question. For centuries, sailors have known that some ocean currents carry warm water from the tropics towards the poles. These currents affect the climate of the lands they pass. Western Europe, for example, has milder winters than places in Canada at the same latitude, partly because of the warm water carried across the Atlantic by the Gulf Stream.
