How it works

Rates for FY 2083/84 (2026/27) as set by the Finance Act 2083: one table for single and married people. Up to Rs 10 lakh: 1% (social security tax; not charged if you contribute to the Social Security Fund), Rs 10–15 lakh: 10%, Rs 15–25 lakh: 20%, Rs 25–40 lakh: 27%, above Rs 40 lakh: 29%.

Deductions: approved retirement contributions (SSF, PF, CIT) up to the lowest of your contribution, Rs 5,00,000 or one third of income; life insurance up to Rs 40,000; health insurance up to Rs 20,000; private building insurance up to Rs 10,000. Women whose income is only from employment get a 10% rebate.

Is there a separate tax table for married couples in 2083/84?

No. From FY 2083/84 single and married people use the same table.

Who does not pay the 1% social security tax?

People who contribute to the Social Security Fund (SSF) or an approved pension fund, pension income and sole proprietorship income.

What is the tax on Rs 12 lakh a year?

Rs 10,000 (1% on the first 10 lakh) + Rs 20,000 (10% on the next 2 lakh) = Rs 30,000 before deductions. If you contribute to SSF the 1% is not charged.
