Koshi Tapu Wildlife Reserve: An Overview
Koshi Tapu Wildlife Reserve is the only wildlife reserve in Nepal. Koshi Tapu Wildlife Reserve is located on an island formed by the Saptakoshi River in Sunsari and Saptari districts under Province No. 1. The main objective of the reserve is to increase the number of buffaloes by conserving them, which are considered to be very rare in Nepal. As this reserve is made up of sand dunes of the river, it is mostly found in the forests of Sisau and Khayar. According to the 2018 census, the number of Arna has reached 441. This reserve is the main habitat of birds.
About 490 species of birds are found here, including various species of ducks, two species of reddish and many species of buckwheat, eagles, storks, and other waterfowl. Due to these reasons, this reserve was included in the Ramsar list in 1987. If this reserve can be expanded to Chatara area in the north and Koshi river and Trijuga area of Udaipur district, it can be developed as an important protected area in the eastern region.
Among the aquatic animals are ghadiyal, crocodiles, storks, and a variety of fish. Bird watchers have been visiting the reserve. Through tourism, employment opportunities have been created in the local community and livelihood has been supported. Conservation, development and income generation programs have been conducted in the intermediate zone from the budget received from the income of the reserve.
